Precision medicine has brought about a profound shift in our understanding of clinical practice. In contrast to traditional models based on generalised protocols, this approach aims to tailor diagnostic and therapeutic decisions to the specific biological characteristics of each patient. However, this transformation does not depend solely on technological advances or the availability of data, but on the healthcare system’s ability to integrate molecular knowledge into clinical decision-making in a coherent, rigorous and coordinated manner.
Precision medicine is not about accumulating data, but about making better decisions. And that is only possible when molecular diagnosis is understood as part of an interdisciplinary process. Nevertheless, for a long time there has been an implicit resistance to acknowledging this structural weakness in the system, a resistance that, in part, still persists. Because, although the speciality of Clinical Genetics has recently been recognised, the professional integration of other key roles in molecular diagnostics remains an unresolved issue.
