The Pfizer–University of Granada–Regional Government of Andalusia Centre for Genomics and Cancer Research (GENyO) recently held, in collaboration with the Association of Parents of Children with Cancer in Granada (“AUPA”), the First Conference to mark International Childhood Cancer Day, an educational and awareness-raising initiative to mark 15 February, International Childhood Cancer Day. The event, which took place successfully at GENyO’s headquarters, brought together healthcare professionals, the research community, families and the general public to discuss advances and challenges in paediatric and adolescent cancer.

The event featured presentations focusing on the research of Dr Verónica Ramos, a researcher at the University of Granada, and on clinical care, with contributions from specialists such as Juan Francisco Pascual and Emilia Urrutia, who work in the paediatric oncohaematology department at the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital. This was made possible thanks to the active collaboration of AUPA, a leading organisation in supporting patients and their families.

One of the highlights of the day was the closing testimony from a family—the parents of a teenage son diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukaemia—who shared their experience throughout the process and celebrated the patient’s current remission. In their speech, they expressly thanked the team at the Virgen de las Nieves Hospital for their work and AUPA for their support, particularly highlighting their help in dealing with the bureaucracy and administrative procedures associated with the illness.

Following the presentation, a discussion with the audience took place, during which the need to improve care for adolescent patients was highlighted, including the desirability of having a dedicated area for this patient group. The importance of involving physiotherapists and nutritionists as part of a multidisciplinary approach to comprehensive patient care was also emphasised.

Through these conferences, GENyO and AUPA are reinforcing their commitment to raising social awareness, disseminating scientific knowledge and continuously improving care for children and adolescents with cancer, by fostering dialogue between research, healthcare providers and families.
