Professor Marta Alarcón Riquelme is the Scientific Director of the Unit. She leads several research groups. She is largely experienced in molecular genetic research. Since the beginning of her scientific career, she has frequently used sequencing and genotyping platforms.

Thanks to the use of these technologies it has been possible to describe several susceptibility genes in the disease pathogenesis responsible for several complex diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, etc.

Her studies are aimed not only at describing genes or polymorphisms associated to these diseases, but also the relationship between polymorphisms and gene expression mechanisms and their changes on coding proteins. Her group has also described the possible genetic interactions between genes associated to diseases.

Her experience with the new high-throughput technologies and the results obtained has promoted numerous national and international collaborations thanks to the groups involved and to the samples collected. All this has made possible that Professor Alarcón and her group are leaders in the study of genetic diseases associated with groups of population.

Technical Staff of the Unit:

  • Luis Javier Martínez González: Genomics Unit Head at GENYO, Centre for Genomics and Oncological Research: Pfizer / University of Granada / Andalusian Regional Government. BA in Biological Sciences (University of Granada), Postgraduate Certificate in biotechnology (UNED, The National Distance Education University) and doctoral degree, with honors, in biomedical sciences (Forensic Genetics and Molecular Anthropology), University of Granada.
After joining GENyO he starts working on detection and annotation of genomic differences, epigenetic variations and gene expression applied to cancer and rare diseases, using NGS platforms and high resolution scanners. Applying genetic science to the study of prostate cancer, environmental toxicology and pharmacogenomics.
He has participated in more than 20 funded research projects and clinical trials; besides working in public-private partnerships for research. He is also project reviewer for public funding agencies. He has supervised PhD Thesis, bachelor's thesis and master's thesis. He is referee for indexed journals, in addition to be the author over 25 papers in international indexed journals. He has participated in many conferences and has been invited speaker at several research centers.

  • Belén Martínez García: She received the Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Granada. She obtained her Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Molecular Biology at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the School of Medicine (University of Granada).
She is experienced in RNA and DNA extraction techniques, capillary sequencing, quantitative PCR, genotyping and methylation microarrays, and next generation sequencing.
Her work consists of the technical support to the users, laboratory protocols performance in order to implement the projects carried out at the Unit.
